President Donald Trump may be gearing up to halt coronavirus relief funding to sanctuary cities across the country who are providing protections to illegal aliens as well as giving some access to taxpayer funds and programs.
While speaking in the White House East Room on Tuesday at an event to highlight small businesses impacted by the CARES Act Paycheck Protection Program, the president suggested that new federal payments to help states deal with the coronavirus pandemic could depend on whether or not they were home to sanctuary cities.
Trump told reporters he had discussed the matter with Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy, and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, and said that he and congressional Republicans were not “looking to recover 25 years of bad management and to give them the money that they lost” because it would be “unfair to other states.”
“If it is COVID related, we can talk about it. We want things including sanctuary city adjustments,” the president said.
“I don’t even think they are popular even by radical left, because people are being protected that shouldn’t be protected, and bad things are happening with sanctuary cities,” Trump continued.
“It is one of the things we think about. If we are going to do something for states, they will want something having to do with sanctuary cities and other different points that we can discuss a little later on.”
Liberals are silly. Sanctuary cities are illegal in the first place. Donald Trump requiring states to follow federal laws to get federal money makes sense and isnt Quid Pro Quo. It is law enforcement.
Trump also addressed COVID funding and sanctuary cities earlier at a press event with Florida Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis:

TRUMP: I think there’s a big difference between the state that lost money because of COVID and the state that’s been run very badly for 25 years. There’s a big difference in my opinion. And you know, we’d have to talk about things like payroll tax cuts, we would have to talk about things like sanctuary cities as an example. I think sanctuary cities are something that has to be brought up where people that are criminals are protected. They are protected from prosecution. I think that has to be done. I think that’s one of the problems that the states have. I don’t even think they know they have a problem but they have a big problem with it. The sanctuary city situation. We have to talk about a lot of different things.
Trump has railed against sanctuary cities for years, which generally decline to cooperate with federal immigration authorities and offer services to illegal immigrants.
Trump’s administration has placed extreme importance on securing the southern border and going after illegal immigrants.
With that in mind, it’s not surprising that the president does not want to provide taxpayers funds to states who will use a portion of the money to help illegal aliens over legal citizens struggling during the pandemic.
