A New York woman has been arrested and charged with child endangerment after police say she drove six underage children around her county and used them to steal signs supporting President Donald Trump and Republican Rep. Elise Stefanik.
The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office says deputies pulled 45-year-old Deana Algarin over and found a pile of signs she and the group of kids had stolen from private property around Tribes Hill and the Town of Amsterdam.
Algarin has now been charged with criminal possession of stolen property, petit larceny, and two seatbelt violations involving children under 15. On top of that, she’s also been charged with marijuana possession.
While always a problem, it appears sign theft has become more and more of an issue as Election Day approaches. A New Jersey man and woman in their mid-20s were arrested last week after reportedly being caught on security footage stealing two pro-Trump signs and a Thin Blue Line flag from a front yard in Maine. In Massachusetts, one man said he was forced to erect an ugly electrified fence around his New Bedford property after his pro-Trump signs were stolen repeatedly.
“I’m defending my property and my right to free speech,” school committee member John Oliveira said. “This is about my right to free speech, period…This is the state of the country where people take signs off other people’s lawns instead of respecting other people’s opinions.”
