At a Senate hearing on Tuesday, Senator Rand Paul slammed Dr. Anthony Fauci, Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.
Before confronting the doctor with evidence that NIAID had really supported ‘gain of function’ research at the Wuhan Institute of Virology in China, which some believe is the root of the COVID-19 outbreak, the Kentucky senator warned him about the criminal consequences of lying to Congress.
Senator Paul responded, “As you are aware, Dr. Fauci, lying to Congress is a crime.” “Lying to Congress is punishable by a felony and a five-year sentence under Section 1001 of the United States Criminal Code.”
“On your most recent visit to our committee on May 11th, you said that the NIH has never sponsored gain of function research at the Wuhan Institute of Virology and will not do so in the future,” Paul added. “However, Dr. Shi conducted gain of function research solely at the Wuhan Institute, using NIH funding.”
“I’d like to request unanimous agreement to enter that Wuhan virology publication entitled ‘Discovery of a rich gene pool of bat SARS-related coronaviruses’ into the record,” he said. “Please send Dr. Fauci a copy of the journal article. Dr. Shi acknowledges the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in this publication and mentions the exact number of the grant she received from them. She coupled two bat Coronavirus genes, spike genes, with SARS-related backbone in this paper to develop novel viruses that are not found in nature. The ability of these lab-created viruses to multiply in humans was then demonstrated.”
“In these tests, genetic information from various coronaviruses that infect animals but not people was combined to create a new virus.
“Viruses that only infect animals in the wild were altered in a Wuhan lab to develop the ability to infect humans. This research fulfills the NIH’s criteria of “research that was subject to a funding suspension on gain of function” from 2014 to 2017.
“However, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) failed to detect this, and it was never investigated,” he stated. “The Wuhan group used NIH funds to produce novel, chimeric SARS-related coronaviruses able to infect human cells and laboratory animals,” said Dr. Richard Ebright, a molecular biologist at Rutgers.
“The National Institutes of Health,” Paul began.
“May I respond?” Fauci jumped right in.
“This is the definition you guys came up with,” Paul explained. “It claims that scientific study that improves mammalian transmissibility is a gain of function. They took animal viruses that exclusively exist in animals and made them more human transmissible. What makes you think that isn’t a gain of function?”
“It isn’t,” Fauci stated emphatically.
“It’s a dance, and you’re dancing around it because you’re attempting to absolve yourself of guilt for 4 million people dying around the world as a result of a pandemic,” Paul explained.
Fauci responded, “I have to — oh, now you’re getting into something.”
“We don’t know if it originated from the lab, but all evidence points to it coming from the lab, and those who sponsored the lab, including yourself, will bear responsibility,” Paul concluded.
“I completely despise…” Fauci raised an objection.
“This committee will give the witness the opportunity to respond,” an unidentified member of the body stated.
“I completely despise the deception that you are currently spreading, senator, since it is molecularly impossible,” Fauci claimed, referring to the viruses employed in the studies described in the annual reports published in the literature.
“No one is claiming that those viruses are to blame,” Paul stressed. “No one is claiming that those viruses were the source of the pandemic.
Paul stated, “You can’t get away from it.” “It satisfies your criteria, and you are concealing the truth.”
“I’m not trying to hide the reality. Before someone indicated Senator Paul’s time was up, Fauci responded, “You are the one.” Fauci was given ample opportunity to answer.
Fauci said, “Let me just finish.” “I want everyone to understand that when you look at those viruses — and this has been determined by a qualified virologist and an evolutionary biologist — those viruses are molecularly unable to produce SARS-CoV-2.”
“No one claims to be,” Paul stated. “No one is claiming that those viruses were to blame for the epidemic. We’re calling them gain-of-function viruses because they’re animal viruses that have become more transmissible in humans, and you’re the one who paid for it. And you’re not willing to admit the truth.”
“And you’re claiming that our actions resulted in the deaths of individuals…” Fauci reacted.
Paul responded, “It could have been.” “It was possible.”
Fauci exploded, “I completely resent that.” “And, senator, if anyone is lying here, it’s you!”
