New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez actually delivered a kind message on Sunday to President Donald Trump after he was taken to Walter Reed Military Hospital as a precautionary measure after he tested positive for coronavirus.
Ocasio-Cortez, a leading progressive figure who has not been shy about attacking Trump, called news of the president’s infection “tragic.”
“I personally don’t think it’s appropriate for us to be talking about how a diagnosis of a disease is a political play,” the representative said.
“I hope that this rallies the country to socially distance, to get more serious, if they haven’t, about mask-wearing and making sure that we are taking the spread of this disease seriously,” she added.
Quite incredible to see AOC — who did call Trump a “white supremacist last week” — understand the moment and reject playing politics.
At least for now.
However, Democrat nominee Joe Biden addressed reporters and while he offered his well wishes to the president.
But he also could not help but take a swipe at him and at those who want to reopen the nation, Mediaite reported.
“Well first of all, our prayers are with the president and the first lady that they recover fully, number one,” the former vice president said.
That would have been the kind thing to say and then move on to other questions, but Biden could not leave it at that and had to make the story about politics.
“Number two, I think that I hope it changes the perception among many people who thought that not wearing a mask made them somehow, I don’t know, free or whatever,” he said. “It’s not about wearing the mask to protect yourself, it’s wearing the mask to protect other people, people around you, it’s a patriotic thing to do.”
“I hope that we listen to the advice of the president’s own director, Dr. Redfield of the CDC. He held up a mask and said, paraphrasing, we can save an awful lot of lives, more than the vaccine if we just wear this mask the next hundred days,” he said.
“So it’s deadly earnest, deadly serious and I’m hoping that it’s a wake-up call for the country. There should be a mask mandate,” he said, The Associated Press reported.
Biden has also had his staff begin door to door campaigning to catch the Trump campaign on its ground game.
“Joe Biden is a complete hypocrite because after months of saying door-to-door campaigning was dangerous and would kill people, his campaign is now engaged in doing just that because he knows he’s getting outworked on the ground,” Trump campaign spokesperson Tim Murtaugh said.
It is astounding how the rules change for Democrats depending where in the game they are.
